What is Generational Trauma?

mentalhealth mindset Mar 01, 2023

I recently read a book called "Mindset" by Carol Dweck and came across a passage that made me reflect on generational trauma and how it can shape our self-perception. The passage discusses how teachers and studies can determine a child's future through a single test, but questions whether this approach can really measure our potential and what we're capable of achieving. The fixed mindset says that tests or experts can simply measure our flexibility and project it into the future, without the need for a crystal ball. However, I believe that people's perceptions of us can greatly affect our potential and what we believe we are capable of achieving.

For instance, my mother suffered from generational trauma, which she passed on to me. She would say things about me that I believed to be true, like "that's just the way I am" or "I can't change that." I repeated these statements as if they were true but recently realized that they were limiting beliefs that I needed to overcome. I understood that we are all born with potential, and with education and experience, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. Unfortunately, we often lose this belief as we grow older and are influenced by the beliefs and experiences of those around us.

Personal Development

Personal development is a lifelong journey, and we should teach children about their potential at a young age so that they can see and understand what they are capable of achieving. This applies to all aspects of life, including weight loss, career, and personal growth. We often shortchange ourselves, but I want to remind you that you are unique and have the potential to achieve anything you desire. The power to achieve greatness lies within us, and it is up to us to recognize and harness that power.
